7111 Droid Fighter was released in 1999 as part of the Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace line. The set depicted a brown Trade Federation Droid Starfighter.

Description[edit | edit source]

The set is composed of mainly brown, grey, and tan pieces, which are combined together to give the appearance of a Droid Starfighter as they typically appeared before the Clone Wars. The droid can shift forms between flying and walking mode by rotating the wing sections down (which become legs), pulling the head out of its flying position, and putting it at the front of the ship. No minifigures are included in this set.

Background[edit | edit source]

The Variable Geometry Self-Propelled Battle Droid, Mark I, also known as the Vulture-class droid starfighter or Vulture droid was a droid starfighter used by the Trade Federation, and after the outbreak of the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Droid Starfighters were used for a variety of missions and roles before and during the Clone Wars, the first known significant use being during the Trade Federation's invasion of the planet Naboo and the subsequent battle, where they fought against Naboo N-1 Starfighters. Vulture droids were also used throughout the remainder of the clone wars, and continued to serve a disposable purpose, as they were quite ineffective against most any other starfighter or ship. Therefore, they were only used in overwhelming numbers, to subdue enemies.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • This set was also included in the Zellers Value Pack.
  • This is the only set of a Vulture Droid Fighter released alone.
  • Other than most UCS and Mini sets, this is one of the few Star Wars sets not to include a minifigure.
  • In the back of the instruction manual, an alternate version can be built that depicts a giant robot.
