Book One: The Past and the Future

Prologue - Zae

Ones and zeroes. True and false.

Everything can be explained with an analogy to computers.

For example, writing. For those of you who haven't coded before, let me explain. Whenever you make a code, as a general rule you establish your variables at the top, define them later in your code, and use them even further down. Writing is the same way. First you name your characters, then you give them a personality and a life, and finally, you get to your plot where your characters do stuff.

My name is Zae Garmadon, and yes, I'm writing this during programming lessons.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away - oh, wait, this is the Ninjago forum, not Star Wars. Then in that case, there once was a little village in which stood an abandoned blacksmith shop. Kai and Nya used to work there; don't worry, you'll meet them later.

This is where my story begins.

"The place where four weapons and paper unite," the paper read. Sensei must get better at his riddles.

My father, Sensei Wu, sent me on a scavenger hunt, to teach me about responsibility and decision-making. Like I needed any practice with that. (Dangit, past me, yes, you did.)

"Somewhere around here is that next clue," I mumbled. "This was where the map was-wait a second..."

I walked over to the wall and pulled the lever. The sign half-lowered, and in the place where the map was once kept was my next clue.

See, what did I tell you? Everything can be written in code.

if(cluelocation = pilotepisodes.maplocation){

boolean cluefound = true;}

That's essentially saying that if the clue location equals the map location from the pilot episodes, the clue is found. And lucky for me...cluefound=true.

Luckily for me, Zae.health>0...unless I watch my back...

Chapter One - Coyote

This is what I call boring. Sitting around, doing nothing, just sitting on cloud nine.

Literally.

Most people call me Coyote, since my full name is way too long for anyone to pronounce. All you need to know is that I'm Zae's best friend and that my parents are Jay and Nya. So I guess that makes me Coyote Walker.

Well, Sensei thought that some nindroids might attack Ninjago again, so I'm sitting here, keeping watch over my grandparents' junkyard. And unlike the rest of the family, I'm not a tinkerer in their sense of the word.

"Coyote!" Grandpa shouted. "Can you grab me the Jiggawamatic Converter?"

"English please?" I shouted back.

Grandpa sighed and called for Dad.

Well, with that out of the way, I can now go back to pondering why Sensei thought such old technology from three decades ago would do any harm. Unfortunately, that's when my cloud dissolved.

Being a ninja of air, I had no problem with breaking my fall. The problem was with defending myself against the lasers being shot at me.

I grabbed a pipe from the piles and dove under a laser. Throwing the pipe, I dodged another bolt and guided the pipe into a nindroid's face. Unfortunately, that was when another bot hopped onto the magnetic crane. I grabbed some grounding boots and ran toward the crane. As I got close, I leaped upwards into the booth as my boots fell off. I went flying into the giant magnet.

Why aren't my powers working? I wondered.

"Help!" I shouted. "I'm stuck!"

That was when the crane dropped the magnet.

The magnet flew toward the ground, and the one person who could do anything about it was stuck to it, flying toward death at five G's, maybe more.

At the last second, the magnet let go of me, and I jumped out of the way to avoid certain doom.

When the dust cleared, a certain royal blue-colored ninja stood, holding a pair of golden nunchuks.

"Dad!" I shouted.

Jay Walker. Legendary lightning ninja, first to learn Spinjitzu of the five original elemental ninja. But I thought the golden weapons had been desteroyed through a time paradox...

Jay jumped off of a stack of tires into the crane, knocking its nindroid out. The stack of tires fell on top of a control panels, hitting random buttons that just happened to open traps for the nindroids. Any that were left either fled or were sucked onto the giant magnet.

"Dad!" I shouted again. "Where did you get those nunchuks from?"

"Do you really want to know?" he asked.

I nodded.

"Well," he said, "it all began three decades ago..."

Jay, 30 Years Ago

The Overlord had just been defeated a second time. Lloyd, Sensei Wu, and Sensei Garmadon were all saved from the Overlord's traps. But we lost our powers again. After the Overlord's first defeat, our elemental blades were stolen by an unknown person, and we wanted our powers back.

I managed to track down the golden weapons; it seemed that the time paradox did not destroy the weapons, but rather shot them into space with the Mega Weapon. Although the latter turned into what we now know of as the North Star, the golden weapons were in orbit, waiting to be returned to Ninjago. And that time had just arrived. An asteroid was hurtling toward Ninjago, and the golden weapons were about to be its first casualties...

The meteor shower was all that was on the news that night; the golden weapons were stuck in craters on a particular rock.

And that rock was hurtling toward Borg Tower.

"Zane!" I shouted. "Hurry up!" I went in NRG form and flew up to the top of the tower. Kai followed suit. Cole was scaling the wall, and Zane was trying to control a flying 'copter.

We made it to the top, and Zane jumped out. The helicopter crashed into the roads below.

"Zane," Cole growled.

"My systems calculated that there would not be such a great impact," Zane defended.

"Incoming!" Kai shouted. He lept off the building, landing on the meteorite. Cole and Zane followed suit.

According to the plan, my job was to keep them safe from the nindroids below while they grabbed the weapons from the craters.

I went NRG again and flew down to the ground. Nindroids swarmed the plaza.

I flew by a few, blowing their fuses, and shot lightning at a few others. When the other three ninja reached the ground, Cole threw me my nunchuks, and I got my storm fighter ready.

That was when the four-armed skeleton entered the fray.

Chapter Two - Neido

Peace and quiet. Is that too much to ask?

Then again, my home world is Crux Prime.

Welcome to LEGO Universe. My name is Neido, and I live at the Ninjago monastery ruins, surrounded by the Bottomless Pit on three sides and a skeleton mining facility on the fourth.

Well, there's a lot of work to do, so I'll do my explaining on the way.

Crux was a cubic planet first inhabited by a group of minifigures known as the Second Builders. (The First Builders created the Universe.) In an attempt to find the source of Pure Imagination, four explorers found the Temple of the First Builders. But one of them was power-hungry and created the Maelstrom. His Spider King dragged him into the Imagination, upon which the temple exploded. Baron Typhonus today is now not only inside the center of the Maelstrom, but he also controls it.

In an attempt to ward the Maelstrom off, the other three adventurers, Hael Storm, Dr. Albert Overbuild, and Duke Exeter, along with Typhonus's protegé, Vanda Darkflame, formed the Nexus Force, a team sworn to protect Imagination. To fill their ranks, they opened a rift to Earth. Many explorers went through the portals to answer the call to save Imagination. Eventually, the Venture Explorer, the ship where the rift was located, was hijacked by the Maelstrom. After some time, the Maelstrom tried to enter the human's universe, at which point the Faction Leaders decided to close the rift. Sending a brave adventurer in to the Explorer to fight through the Maelstrom, they managed to destroy the Rift Maker, returning all Earthlings to Earth.

It's been ten years since then.

And the Maelstrom's only been getting stronger.

Somehow or another, the skeletons have managed to extract pure Maelstrom from the ground to increase their weapons' and armor's strength.

Now one question remains: what are they doing with it?

I jumped down from my perch onto the battlefield below. Immediately, about ten skeletons approached me, axes and swords waving. I quickly sliced two in half with my sword, kicked another three in the jaw, and did Spinjitzu on the rest. Then I ran from the piles of bones running at me.

"What is going on over there!" I translated Nuckal's bellow from Skeletonese.

"We're under attack by the puny ninja from the ruins!" a skeleton yelled back. "We've got it under contr-"

I cut him off, literally. His head fell to the ground and started rolling around, getting in position to bite my foot. I picked it up and rolled it across the ground. Ten skeletons charging at me fell down like bowling pins.

Strike!

As another two dozen skullkin ran at me, I noticed a pair of doors swing open in the wall, and easily fifty bone warriors marched out. Nuckal barked the command to charge, and they did.

I spun toward them, knocking any skeletons out of my way. Nuckal jumped in my path, attempting to stop me, and also got knocked to the ground. I called upon my elemental skills and summoned a pair of chains out of thin air, effectively locking the gates to the Underworld.

Oh, did I not mention that my element was Imagination?

Nuckal approached behind me, swinging his axes.

Wait, axes? Since when did he have two?

I dodge his strike and summoned a giant boulder right above him. Nuckal rolled out of the way and threw one axe. I ducked, letting the axe slice through another skullkin's, well, skull.

Unfortunately for me, dead people can't die.

This time I decided to split open a nearby wall. One big enough for a dragon.

The Maelstrom dragon flew out of the volcanic Caldera Mar, breathing fire everywhere. Even if bones can't die, they can catch fire, however. And Nuckal, thankfully, did exactly that. He dropped something interesting, however. A Maelstrom crystal.

This would be interesting to analyze.

Heading back to the Monastery, I imagined a set of science tools into existence and began my research...

Chapter Three - Zae

I whipped around and slammed my spear into the side of a Stone Warrior's head. The indestructible warrior froze in place, opened its mouth, and spit a piece of paper on the floor. Cautiously looking around, I picked up the paper and read:

You've successfully found the first clue on your trail

but there are still more to come.

Your next place is where the snakes' rise began;

to the Hypnobrai, do not succumb.

Where the snakes' rise began? That could be anywhere. Indirectly, Four Weapons could be it. Or even Cole's rock climbing place where Sensei recruited him. Or Jamonokai Village. Or the Hypnobrai tomb. Or...

Wait, back up. Jamonokai Village. That must be it. The tomb was sealed and lost after Pythor stole the map. So Jamonokai Village is the second-most direct place. It was what encourage Lloyd to look for the tombs...

I packed my bags and spun toward the village right away.

The village was a lot less welcoming than I had remembered. And so...my plan was to swoop in, grab the clue, and swoop out.

Before being pelted by tomatoes...

I ducked into a shop stall to avoid my teal gi being stained red. I swiped at a villager's feet, knocking him to the ground. Locking the door and windows and dragging the villager to a closet, I looked around the room for clues as to where the next hint was.

A drawer with papers sticking out held it.

Opening the drawer, I found a paper with strange symbols on it. Luckily I recognized it from my days at Red Dragon Island. It was written not in Ninjagese, but in Poptropicanese.

If you can read this, think back to where you learned this language. That will hold the key.

Red Dragon Island.

Red, maybe? No, that's too vague. It could refer to the Fire Temple, Torchfire Mountain, even a random building out in the Sea of Sands with red paint.

Dragon? That must be it. The only place it could be is the Dragon Temple off the Floating Ruins. Legend says that the Dragon Temple is the birthplace of all dragons, against Cole's claim that dragons aren't from Ninjago.

Not wanting to head back out to the villagers, I rode the water pipes underneath the building to the Dragon Temple.

Legend was right for once. Hundreds of dragons were flying around here. There were lightning dragons, fire dragons, even water dragons.

I whistled to one, and it flew down to me. I fed it some Dark Condors I caught flying around outside, and in turn it let me hop on its back.

Flying around the Temple, I tried figuring out where the next clue was. Perhaps taped onto a cloud?

That was when I noticed a smaller figure moving across the ground. I wasn't alone up here...

I swooped down from my ledge and landed right behind the figure. "Who are you?" I demanded.

The ninja turned around. She wore a purple outfit, with lavender sparkles across the front and straps holding it on, as well as a matching belt tied around her waist. Strapped to her back was a weapon resembling a techno blade, with the signature gears glowing purple and coming out of a golden stardust dagger. Tied around her neck was a golden dragon charm, and attached to her waist was a golden handle, probably hiding an Elemental Blade. Her curly blonde hair bounced around just below her shoulders, and her blue eyes almost glowed in the moonlight.

"My name's Crystal," the girl said. "What...what are you doing here?"

"I'm Zae Garmadon," I said. "My father sent me here as a part of some stupid leadership building exercise. Apparently my next clue is somewhere around here."

"You mean this?" Crystal pulled a slip of paper out of her pocket.

"Probably," I replied. "While I try deciphering my dad's ever-cryptic writing, why don't we get acquainted?"

"I'll go first, then," Crystal said. "As you know from your adventures, Ninjago is only one of many dimensions. There's another place called the Pokémon World, where I grew up as a Pokémon trainer. Eventually I found my way to Ninjago and joined the team on the Bounty."

"Then why have I never heard of you before?"

"I don't...I don't like talking about that," Crystal replied. I'm pretty sure I saw a tear run down her cheek.

"So then I guess it's my turn-"

"Zae Garmadon, age 14," Crystal said. Her eyes were glowing purple. "Son of Wu Garmadon. Born on the side of a road-" "Okay, now you're creeping me out."

"I call it the 'Dimensional Scream'," Crystal explained. "Allows me to see the future and past."

"Yeah, I'm gonna go with 'creepy superpowers'."

"Suit yourself." Crystal was about to walk off, then turned around. "Before I go, wanna have a dragon race?"

=== Chapter Four - Coyote ===

"So what happened next?" I asked.

"Long story short," Dad said, "Samukai, who somehow went into the wormhole he created, didn't learn his lesson, got greedy, and created a second wormhole. The weapons were scattered across Ninjago, nowhere to be seen*...until today."

"What do you mean?"

Jay pulled a small device out of his pocket that looked like a graphing calculator. He hit a button on it, and the screen lit up to reveal a map of Ninjago, with four dots blinking.

"We're going right...there," he said, pointing at one of the blinking dots. "The Scythe of Quakes is hidden in the old Constrictai Tomb."

"Alright!"

"Nya!" Dad shouted. "You coming with?"

~~~~
I crawled down the rope and jumped into the Constrictai tomb. The wall bearing the legend of the Devourer was still intact, other than the crude drawings on the ninja at the bottom. I pushed Cole's mustache, opening the tunnel.
"You first."
Mom and Dad crawled through the hole, but a tail grabbed me before I could do anything.
"Help!" I shouted.
I grabbed on to the rope as the snake tried dragging me out of the tomb. In direct sunlight, I could see the blue scales of the villain. But he wasn't a Hypnobrai.
"The Aquamari? But I thought you were myths!"
"Well," the water serpent hissed, "mossst people thought the Ssserpentine were mythsss alssso!"
"You know what else most people thought?" I said, a plan hatching in my mind. "That the Aquamari are too afraid to stand in direct sunlight for five minutes straight!"
"Do they really?" the snake asked. "Well, I'd better go prove them wrong!"
The snake slithered out, dropping me at the bottom. I ran toward the tunnel, closing it behind me. Now that I was safe, I decided to start messing with him.
"Ouch! That hurtsss!" the snake bellowed. It slithered back inside. "I don't know what you think you're doing, or where you are, but if you blow any more sssand into my eyesss..."
I giggled and ran off down the tunnel, only to come to a giant chasm between me and Mom and Dad...
If the ceiling were higher and the pit wasn't sucking air in faster than I could stop it, I might have been able to simply fly across. But since that wasn't the case, I was gonna have to get creative.
As a prankster by trade, I knew the right place and time to push people's buttons. Why not have a try at nature itself?
Summoning up all my courage, I called for the air to condense.
Nothing happened.
I concentrated harder.
Air, obey me, I commanded. You are my element, and I control you.
We are the wind, the air retorted. We have no master.
I hate to break it to you, but now you do, I replied. Now condense!
We are the wind. We have no master.
Yes, you are the wind, I sighed. Not a broken record that keeps repeating itself.
We are the wind. We have no master.
"Forget it," I said. The Serpentine's presence for so many centuries must have corrupted the nature around it.
There was only one thing left to do.
"Mom! Dad!" I shouted. "Go into the cavern! I'll meet you in there!"
"But Coyote-" Jay attempted.
"Go!" I yelled back. And with that, I jumped into the chasm...
Pure darkness.
I'm not talking about the pitch black when there's no light. No, this darkness was almost tangible.
Then a hand grabbed me.
I whipped around. A purple face stood out from the dark backdrop. A glowing crystal appeared out of nowhere, smacked me in the stomach...
"Coyote!"
I jumped, almost banging my head on the ceiling. "What-where am I?"
"It's okay," Mom said. "We grabbed you before you fell."
Really? It was that simple?
"So...what happened?" I asked weakly, rubbing my forhead.
"You must have banged your head on the way down," Dad said. "What did you see?"
"I-I'm not sure," I said. "Let's just see this Scythe of Quakes, okay?"
Legofan613 (talk)
Our next stop was Jamonokai Village for the Shurikans of Ice.
And it seems my good friend Zae has stirred up some trouble there. Just like him to do that.
Oh, Coyote, he would say, you know I was just trying to do what my father wanted. I didn't mean to jump-start a giant anti-ninja rally in the process.
Well, Zae, this time you did. We're really gonna have to talk about this next time I see you assuming the world isn't about to be destroyed again. And given our track record, that's probably gonna be the case.
I stumbled out of my thoughts as a potato hit me in the side of the head. "Hey, you can't do that!" I shouted.
Jay ran ahead, going full NRG on them. The villagers weren't even fazed, throwing more vegetables at him. More precisely, through him.
I dashed ahead, using my powers to stop the vegetables from knocking anyone out, my experience in the caves still fresh in my mind. The potatoes and tomatoes stopped in their tracks and fell to the ground.
When the villagers kept throwing, that was when I knew.
"Dad! EMP!"
Dad seemed to understand, releasing a giant burst of energy. The villagers were all electrocuted and fell to the ground, stunned.
"What was that for, Coyote?" Dad shouted at me.
"They're not human," I explained. "They're robots..."
Chapter Five - Neido
It's never a good sign when a scientist says "uh-oh" over his research.
But, "Uh-oh".
This does not look good.
The Maelstrom crystal appears to be five times more concentrated in the least dense parts when compared to samples from the Paradox's lab on Avant Gardens. That means these skeletons are mining super-Maelstrom, more powerful than your average Stromling can handle.
That could only mean one thing. There's only one reason why they would be interested in such über-powerful Maelstrom ore.
They're making armor and weapons.
And there's only one reason they would need super-armor and -weapons, since I'm the only human around not trapped in a ravine or under fire near Nexus Tower: they're planning a full-on assault of Ninjago.
I've got to get home to warn them.
Making a silent oath to return someday to fulfill my promise to Sensei Wu, I slid down the stairs and leaped onto the battlefield.
Unfortunately, I forgot about the dragon I let in.
The flying beast was still making mayhem. I activated Spinjitzu and spun across the field, knocking any and all skeletons to the ground. On the far wall, past my hole, was a set of stairs built in to the wall. I raced up the stairs, throwing my boomersword at any and all skeletons who came up. Eventually Nuckal barked the order to ignore me and get back to work, clearly not worried about the dragon any more.
On my way to Nexus Tower, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye: a skeleton dragon.
If I could tame it, this could be my ticket to Nexus Tower! The portal up there smashed years ago in a Maelstrom assault, and Nexus Tower shoots down most flying things, but perhaps when they can actually see the rider they'll hesitate...
Now two questions remain: my gamble, and what skeleton dragons like to eat...
Well, when you're faced with a question like this, there's only one clear answer.
Hot tamales.
I pulled out a red pepper from my infinite imagination storage and held it out to the dragon. The skeleton sniffed it, then chomped down on it, walked over to me, and began nuzzling me.
"Aw, he's so cute!"
I whipped around, but nobody was there.
"Hello?" I asked. I reached for my katana, when I realized it was missing. When I turned around, the dragon was gone.
A shadow passed by overhead.
"Thanks for the ride!" the figure shouted. I growled, pulled out a grappling hook, and shot it at the dragon's leg. I climbed the grapple, dodging all the random bits and bobs that were thrown down at me. (A pair of socks? Really?)
Finally reaching the top, I swung around on top, to find...nothing.
"Okay, you're really starting to creep me out," I said. "I only know of one person who can vanish into thin air like that, and Coyote's not even in Crux System right now."
"Who said I was literally vanishing into thin air?" The figure looped up from underneath the dragon, who was still flying toward Nexus Tower. "My name's Daichi. The stars told me there would be a ride waiting for me here."
"Really? The stars told you that?" I asked incredulously.
Daichi pulled out a small golden amulet hanging around his neck, a circle covered with embossed stars. "The Amulet of the Stars. A moon spirit told me through this that there would be a ride waiting for me there, and possibly the family I never knew."
"Tell the moon that I could be that family, if you're willing," I suggested. We seemed about the same age - he looked to be just turning 14, and I was not too much younger than that. And we were both orphans.
"The moon says..." Daichi hesitated. "The moon says to watch out."
That was when the dragon exploded over Sentinel Point Zeta.
