The LEGO Movie 2: Back 2 tha Hood (title to be confirmed) is going to have more girls in. The first film drew some criticism for having only a couple, one of which was some sort of unicorn/cat hybrid. In an interview with the BBC today, writer and director duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who return for the sequel, said that "I don't want to give spoilers but there will be more female characters and more female stuff."

Meanwhile, Playmobil have announced they too are making a movie.

Maybe this means my term paper about gender representation in LEGO will be irrelevant

I only just read the last sentence when I clicked back here by mistake, now I have something to comment on- Playmobil movie? hehe, epic fail :P At least that's what I first thought, then I looked them up and saw Playmobil's actually got stuff too (theme parks, upcoming TV series, several video games), so maybe not as stupid as I thought. I still think it's going to fail though, and I lot of people will think of it as a LEGO Movie knockoff, but there's a chance it won't be I guess.

Not really surprising. I kinda wonder when the MEGA BRANDS MOVIE is coming.

I'm not saying adding more female characters is bad or good, but the first one passed the Bechdel-or whatever the crap it's called-test, right?

Barely.

The Bechdel test doesn't really mean much.

How does it barely? I think it passes it more than some films do. (Ex. Independence Day. Search it up, it passes it in the strangest way.) Like, there's more than two female characters, and two of them are veeeeeeeeeeeery major.

It didn't pass the bechdel test because that involves two women talking to eachother without the talk having anything to do with man. Out of 8 main characters (according to McDonald's) 2 are female. 6:2 isn't exactly a ground breaking idea in the relm of women in movies. :P

It's debatable whether it passes the Bechdel test because Wyldstyle and Unikitty do have a "conversation" about some paradox with the Cloud Cuckoo Land laws that I can't quite remember. Even if you do count it (which I do) it clearly doesn't mean much. There are more important things to think about when looking for strong female characters than just what they talk about, especially in an ensemble film where they can't get a lot of dialogue or entirely fleshed out.

After failing to comment in a way that didn't sound overtly feminist, overtly sexist, or overtly both, I decided that it should be safe to say that this will hopefully lead to a more balanced audience for the toys, and then more balanced ratios within the toys. Hopefully they will abolish that stupid gender rule in BIONICLE, and City can get some more buildings and vehicles with broader appeal.

How'd I do?

Okay, I guess. I like how you stated that feminism and sexism are not opposites in a sort of subtle way, as a lot of modern feminism can be sexist.

City has became equal enough with girls(minifig wise), giving city buildings would probally only result in discontinuing friends

I know, and that is an issue I have with Friends. We have one extremely boyish theme, one extremely girly one, and nothing in the middle. :P

I think they're both near in the middle now they both have enough gender equality, and colours shouldn't scare either gender away

They shouldn't, but try convincing a group of 8 year old boys to buy a pink toy :P

I'm not talking about representation of sexes so much as wanting sets with the accessories and themes of Friends, but more of the design standard of City. Not everything that goes through my head has to do with social studies. :P

BIONICLE is what I said needed more females. :P

But you said "I know, and that is an issue I have with Friends. We have one extremely boyish theme, one extremely girly one, and nothing in the middle. :P" :P

I don't think buyers know if the bionicle character is a boy or a girl so gender equality there is an easy fix

Yes, I want something in the middle. :P Friends is good, but City sets are more realistic, and that is something that I value too, it's just that the content is awful and repetitive. Friends is much better there.

It should be easy to fix, but I'm still waiting for them to do it. :P

I sorta agree. City has boring repetitiveness, whereas Friends has more creative designs. The thing that probably turns people off on it is the minidolls and all the pink.

I don't think it's so much the pink as they have released sets with no pink and some with little. I think it is the dolls but that would turn the target audience away
