[List of appearances]

Superboy, also known as Kon-El and Conner Kent, is a Super Heroes minifigure who appears first appeared in the video games LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, before making a physical appearance in 2014 as part of 5004076 Minifigure Gift Set.

Description[edit | edit source]

Superboy has a tousled black hairpiece and light nougat head with double sided printing: one has him with a neutral expression and the other angry with him in mid-use of his red heat vision. He wears a black tee shirt, accomplished by a technique used in The Simpsons, with the top half the black sleeve and the rest his exposed arms. The torso is printed with his red Superman logo in the centre and his muscles' cut on his shirt, which is continued onto the back. He has dark blue legs printed with a brown belt with a small gold oval belt buckle, and the legs feature the pockets outlined with white stitching.

In the video games[edit | edit source]

He has a tousled, black hairpiece which has also been used for Robin and Agent Chase. His face is coloured light nougat and has an open-mouthed smirk. He has a black muscular torso and a red S logo on it. His arms and legs are black and his hands are flesh.

In LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes Superboy has the same abilities as Superman, Supergirl, and General Zod; he is able to use heat vision, x-ray vision, freeze breath, super strength, and can fly, but is repelled by Kryptonite. In the portable version of LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, Superboy is unlocked for purchase after finding the first minikit in Attack on LexCorp. He costs 150,000 studs. He plays no role in the story.

In LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, he is updated to his red and black armour from The New 52. His abilities remain the same.

LEGO DC Super Villains features the Conner Kent Superboy as part of the Young Justice DLC while Jon Kent is playable in the base game. Conner has the same torso and hair as the official minifigure. His legs feature the same design, but are upgraded with dual-coloured black boots. He has Superman's face, and his abilities are reduced in the game in order to reflect his limited powers in Young Justice. These include detective mode, protection from fire and toxins, super strength, hyper jump, x-ray vision, and regenerative hearts.

Background[edit | edit source]

After Superman dies fighting Doomsday, the shadowy Project Cadmus decides to recreate the Man of Steel to do their bidding. Unable to procure an entire strand of Superman's DNA, they instead begin the cloning process by using human sources to fill in the gaps. After twelve failures, the thirteenth attempt at creating the clone grows into a teenage boy in less than a week and is implanted with artificial memories. However, this clone is released from its cell before finishing the maturation process and rather than emerging as a Superman, comes out as a "Superboy."

Believing himself to be the true Superman, the clone heads to Metropolis where he does discover his true nature as a clone. Concurrently, three other men, Cyborg Superman, Steel, and The Eradicator, claim Superman's mantle as their own. Working with the other three supermen, Superboy is manipulated by the Cyborg and becomes his prisoner after he destroys Coast City (home of Green Lantern). Escaping, Superboy meets with Steel, Supergirl, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor, warning them that Cyborg Superman plans to destroy Metropolis when they are astounded by the sight of the real Superman, returned from a coma which feigned death. Rallying with the Man of Steel, they defeat Cyborg Superman and save Metropolis. Superman dubs his clone Kon-El, and he also takes the human name Conner Kent.

Following this, Superboy returns to Cadmus where he is told that he was not cloned directly from Superman, but also human sources. With the DNAlien Dubbilex as his chaperone, Superboy embarks on a world tour, eventually settling on Hawaii, where he has his first encounter with Robin and fights villains such as King Shark and Poison Ivy.

Along with Impulse, Robin and Superboy become founders of Young Justice when the Earth's adult population disappears. Among other members which later join the roster, Cassie Sandsmark, Wonder Girl is most notable for developing a romance with Superboy. After the death of Teen Titan and original Wonder Girl, Donna Troy, sends shockwaves through the younger hero community, Young Justice disbands. Superboy, Robin, Wonder Girl, and Impulse do not team up again until they are all recruited by Cyborg into the next incarnation of the Teen Titans, which also features Starfire, Beast Boy, and Raven. While with the Titans, Robin learns that Superboy's human "parent" is Lex Luthor. Taking control of Superboy to attack the Titans and Outsiders, Luthor reveals that he allowed Cadmus to use his DNA so that he could at last have a minion capable of destroying Superman. Lex unlocks Conner's full power and unleashes it against the Titans before Conner is able to escape from Luthor's influence. He retreats to Jonathan and Martha Kent's farm where he questions his humanity and whether, as a clone, if he truly has a soul when Raven, an empath, is able to show him that he does.

Later, Conner is attacked by Superboy-Prime, another "young Superman" from an alternate universe who is disgruntled with Conner's representation of Superboy. Even when the Titans, Doom Patrol, and Justice Society intervene in their fight, Superboy-Prime brings Conner to the brink of death, and he is only rescued through an alliance between Luthor and the Titans. When Conner awakes, he finds that Cassie is watching over him, with the other Titans having gone on a mission to Bludhaven. The two of them are soon recruited by Nightwing, who is unable to find any other heroes, to strike the Secret Society's headquarters and free the heroes imprisoned there. All goes well until Superboy-Prime attacks, setting his sights on Nightwing, Conner jumps in his place and initiates a rematch with his rival. This time, Conner is defeated for good, and dies in Wonder Girl's arms. After Conner's death, his friends, mentors, and even Luthor mourn him, burying his body in Metropolis. Robin and Wonder Girl also redesign their costumes with colors and motifs that pay homage to him.

Superboy is eventually resurrected by the Legion of Super-Heroes, who clone his body so that he can help them defeat Superboy-Prime. At last victorious, Conner is returned to the present. He is briefly turned into a Black Lantern zombie during the Blackest Night, but is rescued by Wonder Girl. He later rejoins the Teen Titans and moves back to Smallville.

After The Flash and Reverse-Flash alter the timeline, Superboy's history is altered so that he was created by an organization called N.O.W.H.E.R.E.. No longer a clone hybrid of Superman and Lex Luthor, Conner is a clone of Jon Lane Kent, the son of Superman and Lois Lane from a possible future. Superboy joins the new incarnation of the Teen Titans, working with Red Robin, Wonder Girl, and others to protect teenage metahumans from N.O.W.H.E.R.E. and other threats.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Superboy was going to be playable on console versions of LEGO Batman 2, but was cut from the final game. His appearance would have been different from that appearing in the DS game, featuring his T-shirt and jeans outfit.[1]
