"The Surge" is the twenty-seventh episode of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, and the first episode of season 3 and of 2014.
Synopsis[edit | edit source]
The episode begins by recounting the defeat of the Overlord by The Golden Ninja in "Rise of the Spinjitzu Master". After the final battle, Ninjago City was in ruins, but thanks in part to Cyrus Borg, the city was rebuilt and renamed New Ninjago City. The city became the hub for technological advancement, but without an evil to face, the ninja are no longer needed.
In the present day, the ninja, Nya, and Sensei Wu are teaching a new generation of students at Sensei Wu's Academy. The ninja, however, are largely dissatisfied with this new task, finding it difficult to handle the students and missing the excitement of their previous adventures. Nya comes with news that they've been granted an opportunity to do a field trip at Borg Industries, and while Jay, an inventor himself, is quite excited, the other ninja, especially Kai, are not as excited themselves.
In New Ninjago City, the ninja (except for Lloyd, who is left behind), using their old bus, have difficulty driving on New Ninjago City's roads, with the city being designed for the new flying cars produced by Borg Industries. After their bus crashes, they decide to walk the rest of the distance. Inside Borg Tower, the group is welcomed by P.I.X.A.L., who comments on the fact that Zane is mechanical like herself and requests permission to scan him, to which Zane somewhat bashfully complies. After this, the ninja are directed to meet Cyrus Borg personally, while Nya, Wu, and the students are led on their field trip by P.I.X.A.L.. During this field trip, Nya and the students are shown a variety of technological innovations, including a matchmaking machine, which, much to the group's horror, says that Nya's ideal match is Cole instead of Jay.
Cyrus Borg offers the ninja a golden statue of himself, but aside to Kai, he comments that he shouldn't have, as Kai pointed out earlier in their conversation, built on top of the place where the Overlord was defeated, and that the Overlord has become a virus in their system. He also states that the ninja are supposed to guard "them" with their lives, giving no more information than that. Kai and the ninja enter the elevator to leave, with Kai being disturbed by his conversation with Borg. Once they are in the elevator, however, the statue drops, breaking to reveal the four Technoblades and new ninja outfits. The system, however, controlled by the Overlord, attempts to drop the elevator the ninja are in, hoping to destroy them in the crash. The ninja, however, escape and don their new outfits. Meanwhile, Nya, Wu, and the students, who have been led into the factory by P.I.X.A.L., are attacked by the machinery, with the machinery and P.I.X.A.L. now being possessed by the Overlord.
The Overlord-possessed equipment begins to attack the ninja as well. At first unable to figure out how the Technoblades work, the ninja are defenceless and are thrown out of a window. As they fall onto a window-washing stand, they are attacked by a flying drone, but Zane hacks into its system with the Technoblade, controlling it. Meanwhile, Cyrus Borg is transformed into Overborg by the Overlord, who learns of his betrayal.
Zane arrives just in time in the NinjaCopter to save Nya and the rest, carrying them away to the school bus. At this time, the Overlord starts randomly attacking citizens with their machinery, and Wu and the ninja stay in the city as Nya and the students return to the academy and summon Lloyd. After hacking a jet, Kai hears a pre-recorded message from Cyrus Borg, telling him that they must get the Technoblades out of the city, and explaining that the new outfits he gave them would block his technology's facial recognition system. Wu manages to escort the civilians underground, and he and the ninja fight the robots surrounding them, though they are clearly overwhelmed. Lloyd arrives, however, and temporarily stuns all the robots, but the overlord confronts him verbally, telling him he wants Lloyd's power. Wu and the ninja start to flee the city, with Wu carrying the blades, rolled up in some fabric. Once Wu is finally apprehended, however, it is revealed that during his chase, he dropped the blades into Kai's Fighter, and that Lloyd, the ninja, and the blades are now out of the city. Lloyd expresses dismay that Wu has now been apprehended, but the ninja confirm the need to hide, adding that they will return to the city later.
Back in Borg Tower, Overborg's transformed form is shown, and P.I.X.A.L. uses Zane's scan to design a new model of nindroid, which are being produced in the factory.
