This is the mid-priced set from the Iron Man 3 range featuring, surprise, Iron Man (whose variation also appears in the larger 76007 Malibu Mansion Attack) plus his sidekick War Machine and his wannabe of the week, Aldrich Killian, both exclusive to this set, as they race across the water for...I have no idea what. The Iron Man 3 sets are really a big question mark. The largest one, based on the iconic cliff-side mansion attack, is clearly from the movie. The other two, not so much. I guess that Tony and Rhodey were in a speedboat at one point, but it didn't quite resemble this. But that's okay, the movie really didn't offer much else to make sets on. Still though, the movie didn't have much substance to base a movie on, like this set.
The Box and Contents[edit | edit source]
I usually like artwork featuring water and sunsets, which would look great with the red coloring that Marvel boxes have, but the green boat is in such a stark contrast (pun unintended) to the reds and oranges that it's striking, but also rather ugly. The cartoon image of Iron Man in the corner is cool, and I really like the ink splash and city border that the Super Heroes sets had in 2013.
There are two bags, a comic book, an instruction manual, and sticker sheet stuffed (maybe "stuffed" isn't too accurate) inside.
The Build[edit | edit source]
The build starts with the boat, which makes up a majority, as I'm sure you can imagine. There is a pause when the frame is completed to move onto bag two. The build is very simple, and there are no surprises at all. Other than a little TECHNIC mechanism in the back for some flick-fire missiles, it is all bricklaying and feels really drawn out. While this could be good for a casual fan just looking for a souvenir from the movie, this set not actually looking like anything in the movie probably would work against that decision.
The buoy is at the end of the build, which is sort of strange because these sort of things seem to come first as a "warmup". Like the speedboat, there is nothing notable about the build, but it's more forgivable because it is so small.
Parts[edit | edit source]
Minifigures will come later, but aside from them, there really aren't that many notable parts. The most obvious is the bow which is exclusive in dark green. It's not particularly useful, but if you are looking for it, this is the only place for it. Otherwise, there are a couple of dark green slopes, four long black bows, but the only other pieces that are particularly rare are a pair of inverted angled slopes in dark gray (which only appear in one other set) and a pair of odd shell/armor bricks in light gray (also only appearing in one other set).
I wouldn't really recommend this one for the pieces, unless you really need that dark green bow.
Final Model[edit | edit source]
The boat has a good shape. It's really oversized though. The only play feature it has is a couple of flick-fire missiles which can be launched by a lever in the back. This is actually a good integration of flick-fires I think, so that's okay. Actually, the boat looks just okay. Dark green, black, and yellow isn't a bad colorscheme, but it isn't particularly striking or interesting.
LEGO also seems to be trying to pass off the cavity under the bow as a play feature, since images show Aldrich hiding there. The instructions say to place a stick of dynamite inside. I guess that domestic terrorists are having budget cuts?
There really isn't anything to say about the buoy. It "explodes," but so would most LEGO sets if you drop them.
Minifigures[edit | edit source]
As already mentioned, this set includes Iron Man in his Mark 42 armor, War Machine, and Aldrich Killian.
Iron Man's armor is based on the one he wears in the movie and is also included in 76007, but this set costs less. Mentioning that it is movie based might seem like an obvious thing to point out to someone who hasn't seen it, but if you have, then you'll know it's almost stranger to see something accurate in these sets. Anyway, I'm not a fan of the minifigure itself. The Mark 42 itself is less stylish than the Marks 6 and 7, but even then printing a mostly gold suit on a mostly red body comes off looking really cheap. The way which the bobblehead helmet opens is cool and the helmet it looks better in real life than in images, but I still think that including the armor pieces from the old Hockey sets would have helped to offset the strange proportions and made the figure look better.
War Machine kinda sorta didn't really appear in the movie. The man inside of the suit, Iron Man's friend Rhodey, did, but he had adopted the Iron Patriot armor because Captain America wasn't interesting enough to play Mr. Propaganda in today's world. Still, despite basically being an Iron Man recolor, War Machine is a nicer figure than the Mark 42 and I would personally rather have it than Iron Patriot (who was available with the pre-order with LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, for anyone wondering). The face is useful, since dark skinned heads are rare, especially in sets of this size (and when they are included, their use is limited by eye-patches, right Director Fury?). All-in-all, War Machine is a pretty cool minifigure and I'd say that he is the only worthwhile reason to get this set.
And then there is Aldrich Killian who is overshadowed by the heroes of the set, and rightfully so I'd say. He's a weird figure, his character in the movie was rather poorly executed, in my opinion, and he is such a minor character in the comics that he really doesn't have much going for him. His hairpiece is useful, having previously been included with Hawkeye, but makes more sense here. The torso is also exclusive, pretty versatile, and he actually wore it in the movie. The glow in the dark head is really useless and doesn't even make sense in the movie's context. The men and women infected with Extremis did light up, but it was orange/red, not green. Not to mention, it looks like a mess with the blond eyebrows and flesh hands. It just doesn't mesh well, and isn't how I'd design these characters, but I suppose there is a reason for that....
Conclusion[edit | edit source]
Honestly, I didn't like Iron Man 3 (for reasons unrelated to the Mandarin), but this set is nothing like the movie and-PLOT TWIST-I still don't like it.
The boat is stylish, but is a really boring build and very oversized for a speedboat. I'm not a big fan of 2/3 of the minifigures, either. War Machine is the only thing about this set that I actually like, though fans of the movie will probably want the main antagonist too. 76007 Malibu Mansion attack really seems like a much better value, with more recognizable and better minifigures, scenes, and a nicer build. Of course that set also costs twice as much, but the speedboat really is undesirable, a waste of money for anyone but a completionist, and Killian is only for big fans of the movie....

This probably looks harsh, especially since the set itself might not be that bad, but really, it's just filler and not worth the money.
