20201 Microbuild Designer is a LEGO Master Builder Academy set released in 2011. The special minifigure accessories are a baseball cap, magnifying glass and camera.

Content[edit | edit source]

The kit comes with 222 LEGO pieces. Most of these are small plates, tiles or cheese wedges. The set includes pieces to create the Level One Master Builder Academy Minifigure's rocket, cap, and magnifying glass. The kit comes with a Designer Handbook.

Models[edit | edit source]

Three model instructions are included in the designer handbook. The back of the book includes four more models built with parts from Kits Space Designer 1 and 2, built by Steen Sig Andersen. Also, the website includes an inspiration model built by Mark Roe of a two-scaled spaceship built out of parts from the first two kits.

Airport[edit | edit source]

The Airport Model is the main model of the three. This comes with a plane, a transport bus, and a mobile staircase.

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. The Modern world is filled with airports, big and small - and this one is definitely on the small side! It may be tiny, but the microscale Airport has everything you could need for high-flying adventures, from an air traffic control tower to a convenient overnight hotel, and even a loading ramp and bus for carrying people to and from the big city.

Once you've practiced the LEGO® Master Builder techniques of size-scaling and building with small elements, try using your own LEGO brick collection to expand your microscale Airport with even more runways, buildings and aircraft!

Race Track[edit | edit source]

The second model is the Race Track, which features two racers built in two different scales.

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. You can create major speed on a micro scale when you build this tiny, turbo-charged Race Track. The dragster may be in miniature, but all of the important details are there, from the exposed engine in front to the spoiler fin in back...and there's even a ramp and water hazard on the track to make the last stretch of the race interesting.

Compare these racers to the vehicles in the other Microbuild models and you'll see that not all microbuilding has to be at the same scale. Try using the techniques of size-scaling and building with small elements to rebuild the Race Track in different scales!

Shuttle launch[edit | edit source]

The last model in the handbook is the Shuttle Launch, a launch site with a shuttle and a space-age transport bus. It also includes a satellite tower on the right.

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. Your last LEGO® MBA Designer Handbook was all about space building. This one is all about microscale building. Now it's time to combine the best of both worlds! Thiis miniature Shuttle Launch scene has everything a modern space program needs, from an elevated launch pad to a boarding gantry, and even a hinged support platform to raise the space shuttle into position.

There's lots to do here with the LEGO Master Builder techniques of building with small elements. When you've finished, try practicing the new size-scaling technique by using your own LEGO bricks to create micro-scaled versions of the MBA Kit 1 Helicraft, Rocket and Space Fighter to use with the Shuttle Launch model!

Handbook content[edit | edit source]

The book’s foreword is written by Dan Steininger, a Master Builder. The following pages introduce Microbuild Designer, and introduce the kit's techniques and more about the subscription. Following that is the building instructions for the three kit models and minifigure accessories. After that comes the kit's Design Challenge and Questions about Microbuild Design. The Book's Design Lab focuses on scaling down models, followed by highlights on the microscale NYC model, fan Sean Kenney's creations, a highlight on the first Master Builder, Dagny Holm, and the up-scaled Star Wars Miniland.

Author's Note[edit | edit source]

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. Dear LEGO® Master Builder Academy Member,

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the second LEGO® Master Builder Academy Designer Handbook!

As a LEGO Master Builder, I think the idea of having a way for the most committed LEGO fans to come together and bring their building skills to a whole new level is awesome. Many of you have been building and practicing with the help of family and friends, but as a LEGO MBA subscriber, now you get to learn directly from the LEGO professionals...and us from you! When I go out to new LEGO Store openings and get the chance to hang out, talk and see the cool creations you guys have been building, I'm often amazed at the level of details and creativity that you bring. And it's just going to get better from here!

When I first started at the Model Shop here in Enfield, CT, I had the privilege of learning from several LEGO Master Builders. Those men and women had many years of combined LEGO building experience between them, and they had an organized path for learning the skills and tricks needed to become a LEGO Master Builder. I remember the fun I had learning the brick language, mirrorin, double-ups and 1-to-4 scale models that I still build at LEGO Store grand openings across North America. It's great to have a chance to share those skills and tricks with you!

My hope is that you will enjoy each and every step you take forward in the LEGO Master Builder Academy. Here's my advice: have fun, challenge yourself, get inspired by the world around you and your fellow LEGO MBA members, and you will see your skills get stronger. It's our pleasure to go on this journey together with you!

OHGACHUCKA!
