I don't know if You can hear me
Or if You're even there
I don't know if You would listen
To a gypsy's prayer
Yes, I know I'm just an outcast―
I shouldn't speak to You
But still I see Your face and wonder,
Were You once an outcast too?

―Esmeralda, "God Help the Outcasts"

La Esmeralda is a character from Disney's version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, loosely adapted from the character of the same name in Victor Hugo's book Notre Dame de Paris.

Variants

Designer's notes

  • Esmeralda was started before Frollo and Quasimodo, but I found her skirt frustrating and took about two more weeks than I had to. If I hadn't taken so long though, I might not have made the Dies Irae variant.
  • I consider the pink ribbon a removable piece. If a Feast of Fools variant comes, it would use the same (imaginary!) connection point for Esmeralda's tiara.
  • The hairpiece is a combination of the wigs used for the Banshee, Hollywood Starlet, and the original Hermione Granger. The ribbon uses shaping from the Fortune Teller and Tonto.
  • The green eyes are something I considered doing for Princess characters, especially Esmeralda because they offset the movie's color palette (which is one of the things I love about her design; the way it evokes classic villains like the Wicked Stepmother so she looks untrustworthy. The movie doesn't do much with it, as you can tell pretty much right away that she's a good person, but I still like the design). Belle was going to have them in olive green, but I decided it didn't look right on her or Esmeralda. Then, as I was tweaking Esmeralda's eyebrows and mouth, I thought that her face needed something more to standout with such a colorful costume, so the eyes came back. I think that they work better with the Outcast variant than the Dies Irae costume.
  • For those who don't know, "Dies Irae" translates to "Day of Wrath," referring to God's final judgement in Christianity. The Hunchback of Notre Dame plays with a few loose references to this with the Latin chanting in the background, Frollo's position as a judge, Quasimodo's attempted salvation of Esmeralda (who is wearing white), and of course the fiery pit.
  • And that is why Disney does not promote this movie and we can't look forward to any content for it from LEGO in a future Disney Series (if we can hope for another Disney Series at all).
