Background[edit | edit source]

The Fellowship of the Ring

On Bilbo Baggins' 111th birthday, he gives his ring to his nephew Frodo, a Hobbit of the Shire. Bilbo took the ring from Gollum on an adventure he had. Gandalf the Grey, a wizard, explains to Frodo that the ring is the powerful One Ring, which belongs to the Dark Lord Sauron. To prevent him taking over Middle-Earth, the ring must be destroyed, and so Frodo and his gardener Samwise Gamgee head to Rivendell to consult the Elves, and are joined by their friends Merry and Pippin.

The four were then pursued out of the Shire by three black riders, and only escape from them after crossing the Brandywine river. They seek shelter at an inn and find the Gandalf, who was meant to meet them there, has not turned up. After having his identity revealed - Frodo was using an assumed name - Frodo falls and ends up wearing the Ring, which attracts the Nazgul. Aragorn explains to them what the Nazgul are and the five of them leave the inn. With Aragorn's help, the Hobbits narrowly escaped the Riders again, and continued to Rivendell. They are attacked once again by the riders at Weathertop, and although Aragorn fought them off with flaming torches, it was not before the Witch King stabbed Frodo. With Frodo mortally wounded by the rider's enchanted blade, the five fled to Rivendell, and, before they reached there, they encountered the Elf Arwen, Aragorn's childhood friend and lover who sped ahead with Frodo to Rivendell, attempting to outrace the riders. Arwen and Frodo finally escaped when she summoned a flood of water that swept their pursuers away.

Frodo wakes up in Rivendell to find Gandalf, who was betrayed by Saruman and had to be rescued from the Tower of Orthanc by the Great Eagles. They attend the Council of Elrond, where they meet Boromir of Gondor, Legolas the Elf, and Gimli the Dwarf. The council discuss the ring, and Gandalf and Elrond reveal that the Ring can only be destroyed by the fires at the heart of the volcano Mount Doom, where it was forged. A fellowship is put together to reach Mount Doom, consisting of Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli and Boromir.

They are forced due to Saruman's magic to go through the Mines of Moria, where they find a dead Dwarven company and have to fight of a group of goblins and a cave troll. They then are chased by the Balrog - Gandalf manages to force the Balrog down into a deep chasm, but is pulled in with it.

The company stop in the Elven forest of Lothlórien, before getting separated downstream - Merry and Pippin get captured by Uruk-Hai, Boromir gets killed by Lurtz and Frodo and Sam decide to go off on their own, to keep their friends safe. Aragon, Legolas and Gimli then decide to follow after the Uruk-Hai.

The Two Towers

Frodo and Sam encounter Gollum, who has craved the Ring ever since he lost it. He begrudgingly becomes their guide and leads them through the Dead Marshes. The party is later captured by Faramir, who lets them continue once he hears how it corrupted his brother Boromir.

Gimli, Legolas, and Aragorn continue their chase of the Uruk-hai that have Merry and Pippin. They met the Riders of Rohan and their leader, Éomer, who told them that King Théoden of Rohan was possessed by Saruman, and had exiled him. The Riders also encountered a band of Uruk-hai, and killed them all. Aragorn manages to find the trail, which leads into the Fangorn Forest, where they encounter Gandalf, who has replaced Saruman as the white wizard. The party rides to Edoras, where Gandalf freed Théoden from Saruman's control.

The Uruk-hai then proceeded to launch an attack on Rohan, while the company and Théoden, his army, and his people, flee to Helm's Deep, and are attacked by Saruman's army of ten thousand Uruk-hai, which, with aid from Éomer and the Riders of Rohan, are defeated.

Meanwhile, Merry and Pippin have escaped from the Uruk-hai and meet Treebeard, an Ent who saves them from Grishnákh, an Orc who followed the Hobbits into Fangorn Forest. After a long Entmoot, the Ents disagree with Merry and Pippin's plan to attack Isengard, until Treebeard discovers the damage that Saurman has done to their woods. He calls for the Ents, and they launch an attack on Isengard, almost utterly destroying it, and keep Saruman as a prisoner in Orthanc.

The Return of the King

Aragorn, Gandalf and company head to Isengard, where they reunite with Merry and Pippin. Pippin finds the Palantir of Orthanc and sees a vision of Sauron's plan. He and Gandalf head to Gondor to warn of Sauron's impending attack.

Gondor's steward Denethor refuses to call for Rohan's aid, as Aragorn rides with them. Pippin however lights a war beacon, causing more and more beacons to be lit until one is seen at Edoras, and Théodin leads the Rohirrim to Gondor's aid. Meanwhile, Faramir retreats from Osgilliath, before being sent by his father Denethor back on a suicide mission. All Faramir's men are killed, and an unconscious Faramir is dragged back to Minas Tirith by his horse. Denethor believes him dead and tries to cremate him, before going mad when he sees the forces of Mordor destroying the city. Gandalf takes over command, Pippin saves Faramir, and Denethor sets himself on fire and jumps off the pinnacle of Minas Tirith. Meanwhile, Elrond visits the Rohirrim encampment and gives Aragorn the ancient sword of Andúril, which he uses to win the allegiance of the Army of the Dead.

The Orcs attack Minas Tirith, which Gondor defend with the help of the Rohirrim, and are saved with the help of Aragorn and his Army of the Dead, who arrive on pirate ships. During the fight, Théoden is killed by the Witch-King of Angmar, who is in turn killed by Éowyn and Merry.

The victorious army proceed to the Black Gate, to try and distract Sauron from Frodo and Sam approaching Mount Doom.

Frodo, Sam, and Gollum, meanwhile, follow a secret path into Mordor, as the Black Gate is too heavily guarded. Sam grows suspicious of Gollum, who tricks Frodo into dismissing Sam. Gollum leads Frodo into the lair of Shelob, a giant spider, in the hopes that she will kill Frodo, and he will get the ring back. Sam manages to fend off Shelob, but she had already poisoned and cocooned Frodo, leaving him unconscious. Orcs find Frodo and take him to their tower, forcing Gollum to flee. Sam arrives at Cirith Ungol and finds most of the orcs dead at their own hands due to infighting, and frees Frodo, allowing them to reach Mount Doom.

Frodo goes to destroy the Ring but finds its power over him is too strong. Gollum ambushes them, and bites off Frodo's finger to gain the Ring. In doing so, he and the Ring falls into the volcano, destroying the One Ring forever.

Sauron's destruction leads to an earthquake which destroys most of his army, although the Fellowship remained unharmed. Aragorn becomes king of Gondor and marries Arwen, and Frodo finishes Bilbo's book, before setting off to the Undying Lands.
