Re: Color pickers and coding[edit source]

  • So, you mean there's an extension for every browser except Safari? Great :D That'd definitely be handy to have, I'll keep it in mind and look for an alternative sometime. For now though, whenever I need a color picker I just open up an old version of Fireworks so I can do without it. Thanks for the suggestion though :) As for the second part- short answer, probably not. Working on big coding projects kinda drives me insane after a few days, and probably wouldn't consider it unless I was getting paid for it :P Editing and making templates and stuff I don't mind on here because I kinda enjoy it and there are no deadlines or anything like that. Sure, I'd be happy to help debug some PHP or whatever from time to time if needed, but probably wouldn't want to do much more than that, sorry. Thanks for the offer though NovaHawk 03:54, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
    • Thanks, I'll check it out when I get time (loading Fireworks takes ages so if I have something that loads up quick it'd be great) :) NovaHawk 10:50, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

NovaHawk's annoying weekly message- 2016, issue 2!

I know, I've been keeping you in suspense, but here it is! Issue 2!

A big thank you to everyone who participated and forums and proposals from the last issue. If you are one of these people, please feel free to be mean to people who didn't do anything (like Brikkyy13) until issue 3 comes out :P

This week's featured forum concerns expanding the scope of our categories- go check it out.

Also, I will be closing three other forums if there is no further discussion as voting/commenting is 1/vs everyone else or unanimous. Please note that one of these includes a big change to article ratings:

Re: New blog development[edit source]

  • Create blog feature created- umm... what else were we planning to do? :P NovaHawk 05:24, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
    • Well, I have no idea how to go about getting a list of blogs without using SMW, and SMW isn't enabled in the blog space (to save resources). There is NewPages, but that's not exactly helpful. Transcluding it is slightly better, maybe we could do something with CSS:

There are no results for this report.

Can't think of anything else to suggest... NovaHawk 06:11, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Font[edit source]

  • Hey Cody, I vaguely remember Meiko telling you which font was used for the wordmarks here, but I can't find it and I know Meiko's away so I was wondering if you remembered what the font was called? Thanks, NovaHawk 22:42, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
    • Umm... I was just going to make one temporary logo when a name was decided, then people who run the place can make a proper logo when they want to :P NovaHawk 03:16, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
  • Also, I haven't deleted two of those templates you put up for deletion, it's probably better to ask CJC about them, even though they don't directly link to anything and aren't transcluded in the normal way, they could still be used somehow, he was doing some out some tricky template stuff with LEGOLAND things before NovaHawk 03:16, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

Re:Github and templates[edit source]

I thought I'd already contributed to that github discussion - but it appears not :P I deleted those templates - The ExploreBg one seems to be the leftover from an old way of doing things somewhere, and the other two are leftovers from my rather bad attempts at doing maps, which are still floating around in a badly coded thing I mainly stole from other sites - although there are a few floating around (e.g. http://en.brickimedia.org/wiki/Template:DUPLOGardensMap1996 ), it seems those aren't involved in the final templates. Sysadmin rights use[edit source]

Hey Cody, you're a sysadmin and that gives you full access to the sysop toolset. However, you are not a local admin here; you should not be performing local admin actions outside of your sysadmin role. Things like closing AfDs should be handled by local admins, which you are of course free to apply for to perform those actions. Thanks, Ajraddatz (talk) 07:05, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Important changes for 2016[edit source]

Brickipedia and the Brickimedia Network are undergoing big changes in 2016. Discussions are currently open and need your input at Project:2016 Changes:

  • New hosting – Brickipedia is considering changing servers. Please share your opinion on the matter.
  • Consolidate the sites – Brickimedia Customs and LEGO Stories Wiki have recently merged, but to further optimize the site and the community, it has been proposed to consolidate the sites to simply Brickipedia and the Great Ball Contraption Wiki.
  • Readership and Engagement – Proposal to frequently survey the community and visitors to gather data to continue optimizing the site.
  • Scrap the Admin Wiki – Proposal to give the community more transparency by deleting the private admin wiki for Brickimedia.
  • New subsites – Ideas to expand Brickipedia's project scope by adding new namespaces.

Please voice your opinion and read over the proposals and comments! --ToaMeiko (talk) 02:00, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Echo-style icons for SocialProfile?[edit source]

Hi Cody,

If you've been following this discussion about enabling more social tools on Brickipedia and/or your inbox for gerrit spam, you've noticed I've started working on phab:T64520 (code is available at gerrit:278868). As I wrote on the actual changeset, the code is a glorious, untested mess (only test this at your own risk on a local devbox, if you must!) and, as per Roan's comment on gerrit:279089, some of the backend code (the SocialProfileEchoFormatter class, to be precise) will likely be deprecated by the time it gets merged and thus has to be rewritten (ugh...) soon™ to avoid breakages when the WMF devs decide to remove Echo*Formatter code from Echo.

Okay, enough babbling! Onto the actual issue at hand...

When you open up the Echo menu, you'll notice those nifty icons. The icons are pulled from Echo's /modules/icons/ directory. Could you make some new icons for SocialProfile in the same style, please? :) Specifically I'm looking for icons for the following events:

There are some other icons which might (will?) need to be Echo-ified in the future, but since SocialProfile is the core of almost all social tools, I think we should focus on getting the SP stuff up and running (&tested!) and once it's stable enough to be merged, we can tweak other related extensions accordingly.

Thanks in advance! --Jack Phoenix (talk) 10:44, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

Chat backlog stuff[edit source]

The bug Latenightguy stumbled upon is one of the long-standing Comments-related bugs. In Comment::getVoteType(), currently in line 511 there's a call to $this->page->title->getPrefixedDBkey() (to determine the returnto parameter's value for the URL), but for whatever reason(s) $this->page->title is not a Title object as it should be, but rather null, and you cannot call a method (such as getPrefixedDBkey()) on a non-object. What's interesting is the why and whenwhy is this happening and when? We could probably hack around this with something like this:

if ( isset( $this->page->title ) && $this->page->title instanceof Title ) {
	$returnTo = $this->page->title->getPrefixedDBkey();
} else {
// Take 'em to the main page if we can't determine the real returnto param
	$returnTo = Title::newMainPage()->getPrefixedDBkey();
}

But that's somewhat of a filthy hack that might hide the underlying issue(s) and/or introduce even more bugs. Worth a shot though, I guess.

CSS and JS loading on "sensitive" pages (Special:Preferences, Special:UserLogin) can be enabled by setting $wgAllowSiteCSSOnRestrictedPages = true; in LocalSettings.php. There's an open bug ticket about flipping it on (true) by default, too; please feel free to comment there! In a technical sense, this change is literally a one-liner; the reason why it is yet to be implemented is consensus or rather, the lack of one. Also "security" argument is pretty hard to defeat (as you might well know from real-world politics).

I've enabled MiniInvite on the Labs wiki. I'm not sure if you know — or care! — the story behind that extension, but allow me to further clutter up your talk page with some ancient history. :P A long, long time ago in a wiki far, far away...the alias Special:CreateAccount didn't exist and the usual login form sucked even more (yes, I know we all thought that was impossible, but trust me on this one). Aaron and Dave came up with some enhancements, implemented as new special pages: Special:Login and Special:Register; the underlying extension was called LoginReg (and years later I would salvage some parts of it into NewSignupPage).
Together with another extension, InviteContacts, users could send customized signup links to their friends and when their friends would sign up using these links, the user who referred them to the wiki could/would earn points for that (provided that $wgUserStatsPointValues['referral_complete'] is set to a positive integer). InviteContacts did more than that, though: it allowed a user to enter their email credentials and the extension would then screen-scrape their email service, store the user's contacts in memory and allow the user to invite multiple people easily at once. This was problematic because screen-scraping would be extremely fragile and as such, the extension could and often would break whenever an email provider (such as Hotmail) changed the UI and/or backend logic of their service. Furthermore email just doesn't seem to be as popular as Facebook/Twitter/Google+/etc. are these days, so this feature doesn't make as much sense as it did back in 2007 or so. Hence why I created MiniInvite — InviteContacts without all the bloat.
Alas, the truth is that the whole "send out customized sign up links to get people to sign up and receive points for that" logic isn't tested that much; it should work, but I don't think any production wiki out there uses it at the moment, so expect the unexpected (and file bugs if you stumble upon such things).

You asked, "what are the default awards?". To be precise, there is no such thing. SocialProfile contains an awards directory in /extensions/SocialProfile/awards, but this isn't used per se; the actual awards directory used by Special:SystemGiftManager (or rather, Special:SystemGiftManagerLogo) is $wgUploadDirectory/awards, much like how the directory where user avatars are stored is $wgUploadDirectory/avatars.
The /extensions/SocialProfile/awards directory contains some "default" award images that you may (or may not!) want to use in your awards. The images were originally pulled either from Halopedia, ArmchairGM or from both; I can't remember for sure, check archive.org if you're interested in that.
When you install SocialProfile, there are no "default" awards; Special:SystemGiftManager is empty and remains so until you configure some.

As always, let me know if and when you have any further questions; chances are I forgot to mention something that's obvious to me but not to anyone else. :P Also please be bold in editing the MW.org documentation pages if you feel they're missing essential information (because chances are they are; nobody bothers updating 'em as regularily as they should be, not even me, even though I try to do my best). --Jack Phoenix (talk) 10:43, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Hey, do you mind if I replace the Shop quote template with yours yet? I've been adding a heap of descriptions lately and the yellow one's getting on my nerves :P NovaHawk 03:32, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
    • Yeah, it is was JSFiddle, the pretty white and red one :) I thought I had a link, but I can't find it anywhere (check old versions of my talk page and the chat log). You wouldn't still have it would you? NovaHawk 23:45, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
      • Thanks! I've tried getting it set up here, but I can't seem to get it sitting next to the infobox properly- any ideas? Also, it seems that @import doesn't work with {{#css and just breaks any other CSS, I'm not sure if there are any alternatives we can use :S NovaHawk 08:36, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
        • Overflow :/ I knew it was only going to take one line to fix that with the infobox, I just couldn't think of the word :P Nice idea changing the font weight, it's subtle but it definitely looks better :) Made a couple of minor changes- just shrunk the "This is a description from..." line down a bit to be more like the old template and how you had it on JSFiddle, and also the image seemed to be hanging down a bit so I moved it up 3px. Anyway, thanks so much for sorting that out, I've replaced the old one with your code :) NovaHawk 12:05, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Hello! Today I'm reviewing one of the Classic sets that are new for 2015, 10696 LEGO Medium Creative Brick Box. This set was kindly donated to Brickipedia by our friends over at The LEGO Group. So, is this set worth picking up, or is it just another parts pack? As you can see, the packing is quite unconventional. Like most sets branded under the "LEGO" name alone (i.e. not any specific theme) the parts are packaged in large re-usable for containers.

Shorthanding color values?[edit source]

  • I don't pay any attention to what's happening in IE, but I know probably about 5 years ago we had some IE users reporting that stuff wasn't working and it turned out because we were using 3 digit hex values instead of 6. I did some searching and I think it's actually just localised to the HTML "bgcolor" attribute and should be fine in CSS, just wondering if you know anything about it? (I can't test anything in IE. I just found a version of it on my computer, but it's from 2001 :D) I think it should be fine though. Also lowercase letters in hex is ugly :P NovaHawk 09:55, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
    • Haha no don't worry I'd never change a lowercase thing to uppercase just because I prefer it- like you said that's just pointless micromanagement :D Thanks, good to know it's safe to use 3 digits everywhere then, I'll go back to doing that most of the time now :) NovaHawk 05:14, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Making Refreshed support social tools' (misspelled) globals for suppressing the page title/categories?[edit source]

Certain social tools have a global variable or two — $wgSupressPageTitle and $wgSupressPageCategories, with "suppress" consistently misspelled in both cases — which, as you'd guess, suppresses the display of the skin-generated page title (<h1>) element and the category links bar. Originally only skins specifically built for social tools (Games, Sports and Nimbus) supported these two somewhat silly global variables. Later on I've added support for these globals into other skins I've helped develop, such as Monaco. Core — or more accurately skins that were once in core — skins, such as MonoBook or Vector obviously do not support these two globals.

Now, this is ugly, hacky and unsupported by most skins (as most skins' authors aren't even aware that some "random" extension somewhere implements such globals, obviously!) and should probably be done properly via CSS — after all, I can't think of any good (technical) reason why social tools wouldn't be able to use the <h1> element for the page title like just about everything else does. Mind you, 2007 was somewhat different and this code essentially dates back to at least that year. However, the situation currently is that some pages (such as Special:UpdateProfile/custom) display two <h1> elements, the skin-generated one (<h1 id="firstHeading">), which in this case is broken and incorrect, and the extension-generated, ID-less, correct <h1>. Normally two <h1> elements would be a big problem for SEO; for special pages (that only registered users can access) that's not a concern, but it's still annoying.

What are your thoughts on this? Should we implement support in Refreshed for these two globals? (That's technically very easy to do; the only question is do we want this or not.)

Now that I have your attention, I might as well bug you about a few other Refreshed-related things:

  • AJAX page watching stuff — did you have any luck with this? This'd be a nifty feature to have. :)
  • Improving the no-JS experience — while I don't think there are that many NoScript users (or users using ancient browsers) out there, this'd still be handy to have, and I think that at least something as "basic" as the skin of a site should work in a usable manner even if you have JS disabled. Do you think we could try revisiting this patch before Christmas or something?

Coasterpedia bugs[edit source]

Hi Samantha, sorry I never got back to you on Coasterpedia, Ive been very busy lately - I have not been thinking much about wikis this week.

Thanks for your suggestion, I have setup a GitHub project which will track bugs. That's about as far as my Git knowledge goes.

When I'm back next week I'll look at the bugs you listed, I think I know how to fix them. What I don't know how to fix is the emoji issue - I am hoping a full MediaWiki and skin update will do the trick. I'll let you know how it goes.

SocialProfile, Echo notifications, MediaWiki 1.27 upgrade, image migration and more![edit source]

So yesterday I was working on the SocialProfile Echo support patchset, which admittedly is pretty huge (over a thousand added lines of code). We've tested this pretty extensively and yesterday's changes weren't that big, so I was going to go ahead and merge it...until I realized that 1) it wouldn't work here (if you look at the various Echo*PresentationModel classes added in the patchset, you'll notice that they all extend the EchoEventPresentationModel class, which isn't present in the version of Echo that we use here) or on any other MW 1.26 wiki with the REL1_26 version of Echo installed; 2) worse yet, there's a possibility that running SocialProfile with that patch merged on a wiki running MW 1.26 + REL1_26 version of Echo would result in fatal errors. If you look at some file where an Echo notification is triggered, for example UserBoard/UserBoardClass.php, you'll notice that there's a very simple class existence check (class_exists( 'EchoEvent' )) to see if Echo is installed and whether an Echo notification should be generated.
However, the EchoEvent class is not new in the REL1_27 version of Echo; it's been present for quite some time, so there definitely is a possibility that this code misbehaves with older versions of Echo. I have no plans on supporting SocialProfile master + MW 1.26 + REL1_26 Echo setups; MW 1.26 is going to be supported as long as ShoutWiki runs MW 1.26, and the Echo support (which requires MW 1.27+Echo REL1_27) has been written already...

So the obvious solution to this mess would be to upgrade Brickipedia to MW 1.27, along with all the extensions, then merge the SocialProfile Echo patch and upgrade SocialProfile. Sounds simple enough, provided that MW 1.27 doesn't break horribly, right? Except, of course, it's not...

The Meta → Brickipedia image migration. It would really need to be done before the 1.27 upgrade, but we'd need to find a suitable time (preferably a weekend) and schedule the image upload downtime at least a few days in advance. Now, I know you wanted backups, and it's often a good idea to have them, but:

  1. A backup of Meta wouldn't contain anything interesting, probably (the "content" pages are old and have been imported here anyway)
  2. Images are a separate thing and backing up ~100k files would likely take not just time, but a significant amount of disk space
  3. Brickipedia itself is pretty big, so generating a backup might take even days (again, this is just speculation, but it seems reasonable)

The migration process should be relatively straightforward, because in essence, nothing is done with the actual files. The importImages.php maintenance script iterates over the specified file types in the given directory(/directories, I hope), optionally pulls description data from the source wiki (which is exactly we want), and tell the current wiki's (Brickipedia) database, "here are some files you should know about, and here's the corresponding, user-supplied description for each file". It'll take some time since we are' talking about ~100k files here, but at least importImages.php isn't as notoriously slow as the importDump.php script, which is meant for importing XML dumps.

Let's pretend we'll do that and it goes well.

That leaves us with the MW 1.27 upgrade. I actually have no idea how to do that in our setup. Scratch all that and everything else I wrote about MW 1.27. mw:MediaWiki 1.27 says that "MediaWiki now requires at least PHP 5.5.9" but our Special:Version says that we're using only PHP 5.4.44-0. :-/ I suppose we should talk to Ajraddatz about the PHP version upgrade if we want to get the MW upgrade done soon-ish...

Main page bug with low-end mobile devices/devices with a low-resolution screen[edit source]

So you're holding your smartphone in landscape mode, you browse to Brickipedia, and then:

Nokia X empty space on main page.png

It's not immediately obvious that there's indeed a lot of stuff below that empty white space, so this issue might even "scare" new contributors away. Why is that white space even there? I have no idea, but I'm hoping you can come up with a fix. :-) I guess it's the ad space, but I dunno why the ads aren't showing up (I have no adblock extensions installed on this device)...

Tested on a Nokia X with Firefox for Android (Fennec) version 48.0. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 16:40, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

On Samsung Galaxy S3, Chrome, the white space takes two adverts in it - one much wider than the space allows. I'll try and screenshot later, if I can remember how to screenshot on phone :P CJC95 (talk) 16:57, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks guys! I'll look into it and see what's the problem. SamanthaNguyen (talk) 23:10, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

Re: Oops! I fell asleep[edit source]

  • Haha no, I did my usual trick of forgetting I was on chat and you were gone when I got back. So, are you still super-worried about your admin request? :D NovaHawk 21:10, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Admin[edit source]

  • Congratulations, after a very close vote, you're now an admin! Want me to explain how to use your admin tools to do complicated things like deleting pages? :P NovaHawk 08:27, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Brs to bullets[edit source]

  • I don't think you need to go out of your way to change them- it's more an either-or thing isn't it? :S NovaHawk 03:49, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

Re: thoughts?[edit source]

  • Good idea, makes sense to have that automatic :) Fixed it so it should be all working (you can't have expr inside an if, you have to use ifexpr) NovaHawk 04:33, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

AFTv5 and responsiveness[edit source]

I'm not sure which ticket would be the most appropriate (maybe phab:T34293?) so I figured I'd ping you first :P

So I was investigating the IE11 zoom bug (phab:T146565) with a bunch of various skins installed on the Social Tools Devel Wiki. As you wrote, turns out that the AFTv5 widget shows up in most (if not all — haven't tested 'em all yet) non-Refreshed skins. What I noticed is that with zoom level set to 175%, it overflows in most skins — not just stupid ones with a minimal content area (Dusk, DuskToDawn) but also in relatively sane skins (like Nimbus).
Turns out that in /modules/jquery.articleFeedbackv5/jquery.articleFeedbackv5.css the .articleFeedbackv5-panel element (direct child of #mw-articlefeedbackv5, the main AFTv5 container element) is given a width of 700px...with an !important (!) to boot. Ignoring the fact that pixels are evil™ and shouldn't be used, changing this rule's width to max-width fixes the overflowing issue.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is this: could you evaluate the sanity of that proposed fix and see if it's something I should commit to the repo?

I also committed a patch for phab:T146512. If you could take a look at it and +1 it or otherwise let me know it's sane, I'll merge it.

Thanks in advance. :) --Jack Phoenix (talk) 14:36, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Template: User Wiki age[edit source]

Was the change of this template's colour intended or did you do it by mistake? Because the old one really used to fit in with the whole colour scheme of the website and I don't think it was really voted to change the colour on the Userbox proposal page. Vasko (talk) 17:52, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

No problem! Vasko (talk) 08:09, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Oops[edit source]

  • I just hit "thank" on your user page edit- I'm not thankful you're inactive :D (I meant to hit thank on a different diff in another tab) NovaHawk 12:22, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
    • It's ok, I don't know why that actually caused the problem but as long as it works I guess :) NovaHawk 01:53, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

Wikimedia[edit source]

  • Hey, sorry I haven't been around much for the last month- how'd the presentation go? NovaHawk 11:47, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
    • Good to hear it all went well :D Watchlist folders sounds like an awesome idea- it'd be useless for me on this wiki since I check pretty much everything, but I could definitely see myself heavily relying on that feature for other wikis in the future. A bunch of images and descriptions are up for next year's sets on LEGO's site so any time I get on here will probably be spent adding all that in for the next few days (or weeks) but I'll be looking forward to having a better look at it all when I can. Good luck with everything though :) NovaHawk 11:58, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
      • Awesome :D Only 2 days of voting left to go, must be exciting :) I'd vote for it if I didn't use my Wikipedia account solely for lurking :P NovaHawk 00:02, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
        • Actually just checked them about an hour and a half before voting ended to see how they were getting on- I was going to go through and count up all the other proposals to see how they ranked, then I saw how many proposals there were and I figured I could wait :D Looking forward to seeing how they rated though :) NovaHawk 00:46, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
