War Machine, briefly taking up the identity of Iron Patriot on behalf of the U.S. government, is a Marvel Super Heroes minifigure released in 2013.

Description[edit | edit source]

War Machine[edit | edit source]

War Machine has the same helmet as Iron Man in different colours, with medium stone grey in place of red and light metallic silver in place of the gold, which is the colour scheme for the rest of the suit. Underneath the helmet is a brown head printed with cheek bones, lines under the eyes, and a dual expression (neutral and angry). The rest of the body is medium stone grey. The torso is printed on the front and back: the front features the arc reactor in an rounded rectangle shape with red in it and under that is FF 446, the chest has light grey near the abdomen area and on each side of it is written Danger on the connectors, and on the upper right chest plate near the arm is 002. The back features the back of the armour, with a blue star on the right shoulder blade and arrows on the left. The legs are printed with the pelvis area and the knee pads, which are light grey. Part of the boot is printed on the toes. On his left knee pad there is a five-pointed star.

He comes with a brick built shoulder gun and transparent red repulsors and jets

Iron Patriot[edit | edit source]

Iron Patriot features the same helmet in blue, and the visor is silver with a little red design on the top of the visor. The head is the same as the original. The shoulder gun design is the same but in black, as is the printing, but recoloured in dark red, white, and dark blue. The hands are dark red, while the rest of the body is dark blue. The arc reactor has a star design around it and is the same rectangle arc reactor as seen on the original War Machine minifigure. Despite the similar design of the minifigure, the FF 446 is missing under the the reactor.

Background[edit | edit source]

Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes was a member of the United States Air Force and the best friend of Tony Stark. After an incident between the two, Rhodes was forced to don Stark's Mark 2 Iron Man suit, and after a brief fight between the two armoured friends, Rhodes fled, landing at a military base. Rhodes' armour was outfitted with weapons provided by Justin Hammer, and Rhodes was ordered to attend the Stark Expo with Hammer's drones, programmed by Ivan Vanko, who was presumed killed in prison after he attempted to kill Iron Man, but was in fact broken out by Hammer. At the expo, Vanko took control of the Hammeroids and the War Machine armour, and ordered them to kill Iron Man. The Black Widow, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, having neutralized the guards at Hammer's research facility, managed to restore control of Rhodes' armour, and together, Iron Man and War Machine were able to destroy the remaining Hammer drones, and to defeat Ivan Vanko, who had secretly built himself a suit of armour. Stark later removed all Hammer tech from the War Machine armour, and placed it back in the Hall of Armour, and revealed he had built a new version to Rhodes, saying that the world needed a second "Iron Man", as Tony would be busy building Stark Tower and being a consultant for S.H.I.E.L.D.

During the battle in New York with Loki and the Chitauri, Tony contacted Rhodes, asking him for backup. Rhodes informed him that he was in Asia dealing with the Ten Rings, half a world away, and couldn't get there in time. Rhodes later arrived in New York, finding the battle over and Stark introduced him to the rest of of the Avengers: Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Captain America, and The Hulk.

As a response to the increasing threat from The Mandarin, the U.S. Government (who needed to look strong after New York) re-branded Rhodes' super hero alias to the less aggressive-sounding "Iron Patriot", and the armour was given a red, white and blue American flag "makeover" by A.I.M.

Aldrich Killian later had his agents steal the Iron Patriot armour, which Savin used to board Air Force One and abduct President Ellis. Savin then trapped him in the Iron Patriot armour, and delivered him to Killian.

When Tony and Rhodes went to rescue the President (who was being held in the armour above an oil tanker that Killian planned to detonate) and Pepper Potts, Rhodes rescued President Ellis, reclaimed the armour, and brought him to safety. Afterwards, he took up the War Machine moniker again.

After the Avengers had beaten Baron Von Strucker, Rhodey celebrated with them until Ultron attacked. Rhodey later helped protect the civilians retreating to the Helicarrier piloted by Nick Fury and Maria Hill from Ultron's army. Afterwards, he joined a new iteration of the Avengers that includes Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Vision, Black Widow and led by Captain America.
